New York, NY 2003

The client, a fashion photographer and magazine editor, wished to make this storefront into a gallery and a working photo studio. While the neighbors with similar lofts disregarded their basement spaces, we renovated the basement area by bringing light in through the spiral staircase as well as a glass ‘lightbox’ which doubles as a bench beneath the window.

The mezzanine floor is made as thin as possible in order to gain height for a spacious office area behind a translucent glass railing. The mezzanine curtain is double-height, falling down the gap behind the slab to the kitchen and bathroom below. The kitchen cabinetry and office closets are combined into one double-height storage element to further unify the space. The loft gallery has been featured in numerous publications, including Newsweek, NYC Time Out, Italian Vogue etc.
